Have you ever thought about what the world would look like if it’s without colour? What would the world be like if people weren’t Black, Brown, or light-skinned? Would diversity still exist without these colours?

It may never have crossed our minds what a colourful world we’ve been living in. We’re so used to having the colours we see on a daily basis that we might not even realise how much of a drastic change it can make to have a world without any of it.

And what happens when we see colour but other people don’t? When people tell you they don’t see colour, be scared. Be very scared. Someone who’s melanin-rich, like me, depending on where I am and the light that shines on me, I radiate very differently.

But what always illuminates is the light that’s within me. When someone tells me they don’t see colour, I wonder how they could possibly see me. Maybe they don’t see colour because they’re scared of colour, although there’s no reason to be. What would the world be if there was no colour in it? I just want you to think about that for a moment.

The Significance of Colour in Our Lives

Colour is not just a visual experience – it’s a vital part of our identity and Culture. Our skin tones carry our histories, our ancestries, and our personal stories. They are a testament to the journeys our forebears have undertaken and the legacies they have left behind. When people claim not to see colour, they are inadvertently erasing these rich narratives and the significance they hold.

In a world without colour, we would lose a crucial aspect of human diversity. Diversity extends beyond race and ethnicity, encompassing a broad spectrum of experiences and perspectives.

However, race and skin colour are fundamental components of this diversity, influencing how we perceive the world and how the world perceives us. Recognising and celebrating our differences is essential for fostering empathy, understanding, and unity.

The Role of Counselling Services in Embracing Diversity

Embracing diversity requires us to confront our biases and engage in open, honest conversations about race and identity. Counselling services can play a pivotal role in this process.

Through counselling, individuals can explore their own identities, understand the experiences of others, and learn how to navigate a diverse world with sensitivity and respect. A counselling service provides a safe space to discuss and address these complex issues, promoting personal growth and social harmony.

For those struggling to understand or accept the significance of colour, counselling services can offer guidance and support. They help individuals recognise the value of diversity and the importance of seeing and respecting each person’s unique identity. This understanding is crucial in creating a more inclusive and equitable society.

A counselling service can assist in embracing diversity and promoting understanding – engaging with professional counselling services ensures that we can all learn to see and appreciate the rich tapestry of humanity in all its colours.
